Results 21/5/13 – Top seeds James Willstrop and Laura Massaro show no fear at squash’s British Open

England’s women finally got in on the action at the Allam British Open yesterday… despite them playing their opening round in Pontefract, rather than the KC Stadium like the men.

In any case, it was plain sailing for the four seeds in the competition, only dropping two games between them all. Some surprise faces almost managed to conquer foreign seeds; Sarah-Jane Perry dropped just one game on the way to knocking out seventh seed Low Wee Wern of Malaysia and Sarah Kippax edged out a tough encounter with Dutch player Natalie Grinham. Unfortunately, a number of the men, including Adrians Grant and Waller, failed to get over the first hurdle in Hull.

Good news all round for the doubles tennis players in the Power Horse Cup, as top seeds Colin Fleming and Wimbledon champion Jonny Marray got off to a speedy start, beating their German rivals in straight sets. Dominic Inglot, paired up with Filipino Huey, took a while longer but breezed through the final set.

Scotland’s mixed badminton team hammered the USA at the Sudirman Cup, with Robert Blair picking up two victories. Not so good news is that Mark Cavendish is in danger of surrendering the red jersey at the Giro, losing more points to rival Cadel Evans. JJ Jegede also travelled to Beijing to participate in the long jump event at the Beijing World Challenge… but didn’t record a score, so that was pointless.
