Results 20/5/13 – Reading HC amongst the hockey teams achieving success in Europe

Coming off the end of a slow week of sport but before we reach the next one, a few competitions ran into the next week, providing a couple of winners for Great Britain. Delegations from each of the three countries represented the nation in European’s top club hockey competitions, with England’s Reading, Scotland’s Clydesdale Western and Wales’ Whitchurch topping their respective championships.

Out on the ocean, Ian Williams topped a strong week for Team GAC Pindar. Forced with low wind conditions, the defending champion was thrown into a winner takes all battle with New Zealand’s Adam Minoprio to take his fifth title on the Match Racing Tour.

The first round of the Allam British Squash Open kicked off, with the majority of the English stars battling through, including second seed Nick Matthew. In a similar racket sport, Elena Baltacha continues her slow return from injury with a straight sets win in tennis’ Brussels Open. In terms of leagues, St Helens played for their first match in a while away to Leeds and shocked the Rhinos 30 points to 22. In other away victories, Lakeside’s speedway team edged out Belle Vue, but Sussex Sharks were unable to finish their game against Holland.
