Results 16/5/13 – Mark Cavendish secures 100th win but Bradley Wiggins is out of the running

Great and terrible news all round on Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia. Mark Cavendish secured his 100th stage win of his career and third of the 2013 edition to claim the red jersey once again. Unfortunately, Bradley Wiggins proved that he is human after all, with a severe chest infection growing progressively worse until he had to retire. The contender for this year’s Giro (at the beginning of this year’s race, at least) is now a doubt to help Chris Froome secure the 2013 Tour de France.

Phil Taylor proved he is still one of the best at his sport by reaching the finals of the Premier League Darts tournament after an inconsistent season but the old “changing of the guard” may be coming sooner than he’d hoped. The 16-time champion of the world was pushed all the way by the Netherlands’ Michael van Gerwen and the young pretender eventually took his chances and won 10-8, stealing the trophy from Taylor’s hands.

Graeme McDowell won his first match of the World Match Play Championship but it was a shock opening loss for Ian Poulter. Manchester Thunder rose from the depths of the Showdown League by beating Hertfordshire Mavericks to reach the Netball Superleague semi-finals, whilst Bristol Academy rose to the top of the FA Women’s Super League with a third straight win, this time against Chelsea Ladies.

Danielle Brown and her compound archery team failed to progress past the 1/8 stage in the first World Cup of the season and neither Laura Robson or the partnership of Jonny Marray and Dominic Inglot could go any further at the Rome Masters. It’s also bad news for Sandown Sociedad, England’s beach soccer representatives at the Euro Winners Cup, as another thumping loss rules them out of qualification to the knockout stages.
