Results 15/5/13 – Chelsea win the Europa League final

Yes, it isn’t quite the same achievement but Chelsea have followed on from 2012’s Champions League win by claiming the Europa League title, beating Benfica 2-1. Extra time and penalties weren’t necessary this time, but it went close. With the score at 1-1, it took a speculative, looping header from Branislav Ivanovic to secure the win in stoppage time and claim Chelsea’s second consecutive major European trophy in as many years. That means that Fernando Torres is now World Champion, European Champion and holder of the Champions League and Europa League trophies. It also means that “interim manager” Rafa Benitez is the latest to depart having secured a major trophy. Such is life at Chelsea.

It was bad news for British players at the World Table Tennis Championships, with all singles entrants knocked out in the first round and all doubles teams following suit shortly after. Andy Murray retired after completing the second set of his opening Rome Masters match through injury, leaving him in doubt for the French Open. Laura Robson got back to winning ways, however, advancing to the quarter-finals of the doubles competition.

Sandown Sociedad didn’t get off the best start in the Beach Soccer Euro Winners Cup, going down 5-12 to Ukraine’s Griffin. Adam Ravenscroft was Britain’s best hope, reaching the last eight whilst also finishing second in mixed team qualification alongside Paralympic archer Danielle Brown. In King’s Lynn, British champion Tai Woffinden guested for Poole in their shock win away from home.
