Results 14/5/13 – Wigan Athletic are relegated from the English Premier League

Football can be such a cruel game, and so it proved for Wigan Athletic last night. Not only was the 4-1 scoreline away to Arsenal an unfair reflection of the determination and effort they put in, but relegation was confirmed for the team that lifted the FA Cup just three days before. Despite Shaun Maloney’s equalising goal late on in the first half, Wigan have become the first team to win the FA Cup and go on to be relegated in the same season.

In a similar tale of attempted giant-killing, British number one tennis player Laura Robson was hoping to build on her victory over Venus Williams by knocking her sister Serena out of the Rome Masters. Unfortunately, to-ing and fro-ing of broken games eventually gave way to Williams’ dominance and left Robson to rely only on the doubles competition.

A slow day for Sir Bradley Wiggins meant he lost more time on the leaders at the Giro d’Italia, with Stage 10 won by Team Sky team-mate Rigoberto Uran. Daniel Reed, Gavin Rumgay, Kelly Sibley and Naomi Owen all progressed to the main stages of the World Table Tennis Championships, where they will be joined by the likes of Olympians Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford.
