Celtic Dragons got back to winning ways in the Showdown League with a 64-46 win over Hertfordshire Mavericks but it might still be too late to clinch the Superleague title.
Team Bath are currently level on points with the Dragons but boast a higher points difference over their nearest rivals and have a game in hand. Either way, there’s still the small matter of the playoffs to go after Bath complete their final fixture against Surrey Storm.
After losing by thirty goals to Surrey earlier this week, Celtic Dragons were happy to get back on track, but coach Melissa Hyndman wasn’t entirely happy: “It was nice to blow the cobwebs out and that was the Dragons on out court tonight. Obviously we fixed the demons from Monday but I’m probably a little bit disappointed with the last quarter.”
Fortunately, the Mavericks, who are yet to pick up a point in the Showdown League phase, couldn’t make their shots count and goal scorer Vicklyn Joseph’s convertion rate of 77% clearly paled in comparison to her opposite number, Lottysha Cato, and her 91%. Dragons’ defenders Sara Hale and Stephanie Williams gratefully scooped up the plentiful rebounds.
The final match before the playoffs, Team Bath against Surrey Storm, will take place on the 13th May. This follows the final fixtures for those in the Challenger League; Yorkshire Jets host leaders Manchester Thunder whilst Team Northumbria offer Loughborough Lightning one last chance to pick up a win this season.
