Results 19/3/2013 – Yana Stadnik wins silver at European Wrestling Championships

It’s a rare success for Great Britain in wrestling, a sport set to lose its place at the 2020 Olympic Games, but Yana Stadnik earned her new country a silver medal at the European Championships yesterday. Stadnik was set to represent Team GB in London but was unable to get a British passport in time, causing her to miss out on a terrible summer for the sole British wrestler sent there, Olga Butkevych. Stadnik attempted to make up for the disappointment by easily bulldozing three opponents. She put up a good fight in the final against Russia’s Valeriya Chepsarakova, limiting her scoring, but was unable to score herself and was made to be content with silver.

Not much to cheer elsewhere, it’s a sleepy Tuesday. Eve Muirhead and the Scottish curling team are within touching distance of the play-offs after beating Switzerland and home nation Latvia. Top squash seed Nick Matthew fought his way past a plucky Colombian at the Canary Wharf Classic, but it was bad news for British number one tennis player Heather Watson as she crashed out at the first round of another Masters 1000 event, this time the Sony Open in Miami.
