Results 14/3/2013: Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham all sneak into Europa League quarter-finals

Despite a wide range of results from the English sides left in Europe’s second-tier continental competition, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all made it into the draw for the Europa League’s last eight. Chelsea’s fate was uncertain for a long time but an expected strike from Fernando Torres rescued them late on. Tottenham, who had taken a 3-0 lead into the away leg, almost threw it all away when Inter forced extra time, but Emmanuel Adebayor sneaked in a vital away goal that sealed the win, despite another comeback from the Italians. In Newcastle, Papiss Cisse scored another last-minute goal against Russian side Anzhi.

Elsewhere, it wasn’t brilliant reading for British competitors of other sports. The best news was for badminton’s Heather Olver, who advanced to the latter rounds of both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles after cruising past two seeded pairs.
