Results 3/3/2013: Emma Beddoes wins all-English Courtcare Open final

It was an all-English affair at the David Lloyd squash court in Chorley as Emma Beddoes beat compatriot Victoria Lust at the 2013 Courtcare Open. Both had played tough five-setters the previous day and it was Beddoes that got off to the better start, pulling away to an 11-5 first set win. Lust pulled her way back in but Beddoes needed just one match ball to win the match and the the $10,000 prize.

Perri Shakes-Drayton claimed double gold at the European Indoor Athletics Championships. Her 400m win was followed up by a win with the 4x400m relay team, alongside Eilidh Child, Shana Cox and Christine Ohuruogu. The men’s side joined them in success with the last race of the weekend. Out on the ocean, Nick Dempsey moved up to third in the World RS:X Championships and, further afield in China, Mark Allen won the Haikou World Open for the second year in a row.

League-wise, Tottenham Hotspur showed up bitter rivals Arsenal with two near-identical goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon moving them up to third in the Premier League table. Saracens went top of the Aviva Premiership with a 35-14 win against London Welsh. Nottingham Panthers hammered an Edinburgh Capitals side who had, in turn, edged out Sheffield Steelers in the ice hockey and Surbiton thumped Beeston 5-1 in the outdoor version.
