Results 28/9/12 – Ryder Cup begins with a whimper

Another Olympian slinked back into action yesterday as Great Britain’s Paul Drinkhall returned to the table tennis.. table. Unfortunately, his exciting run at the Games wasn’t repeated in Liverpool’s World Cup event, as he succumbed to two heavy losses in the qualifiers.

The media’s main attention, however, has been on golf’s Ryder Cup and for good reason.

It’s arguably the biggest event on the golfing calendar (when it’s on it), seeing the might of the United States square up to the ragtag gang of misfits that is the European contingent. So far, though, you’d excuse someone for thinking that “Team Europe” was “Team GB and Friends”, with every one of the eight matches played so far containing at least one British player. That hasn’t helped them, as Europe finished the first day 5-3 down againt the US. Let’s hope that this rare act of continental solidarity doesn’t end up as a damp squib in the fierce American cauldron and Britain’s best really start to shine.

“In other news”, the 2012 Rugby League competition starts to draw to a close and perennial underachievers Leeds Rhinos have crept into another final that they didn’t deserve during the regular season. A late goal was all they needed and they’ll be hoping to put their Challenge Cup final defeat behind them.

Friday’s Top Performers

* Worcester Warriors – Defied their league position by pushing London Irish even further down.
* Manchester Giants – Racked up a huge score whilst keeping Sheffield at bay.
* Alison Waters – The qualifier marches on regardless, knocking out the top seed.
* Ian Poulter/Justin Rose – The only undefeated European pairing, they managed to stifle Tiger Woods.
* Chris Langridge – Won three games in straight sets, spanning men’s and mixed doubles.
